Baldness Treatment, Male Pattern Baldness, Alopecia Areata
Definition
Baldness is also known as alopecia. It is the problem of hair loss or absence of hair from head of a person. Baldness is usually most noticeable on the scalp but it can happen anywhere on the body where hair grows. The most common form of baldness is a progressive hair thinning condition called androgenic alopecia or 'male pattern baldness' that occurs in adult male humans and other primate species. It usually follows a typical pattern of receding hairline and hair thinning on the crown, and is caused by hormones and genetic predisposition. It is more common in males as compared to females.
Baldness Causes
- The cause of baldness is shrinking of cavity. Each hair sits in a cavity in the skin called a follicle. The follicle shrinks time over time. As a result shorter and finer hair remains in existence. In the end a very small follicle with no hair remains. If everything remains well the hair should grow back. But usually the hair does not grow up. The reason is not understandable till yet. It is related to your genes and male sex hormones. Even though the follicles are small, they remain alive, suggesting the possibility of new growth.
- It is also not clear why only scalp hairs are affected and not other areas such as the beard or armpits. The researches and experiments are going on.
- The other causes can be illness, family history of baldness, burns, trauma etc.
Baldness Symptoms
- Hair loss can occur as hair thinning, without hairs noticeably falling out, or as hair shedding, with clumps of hair falling out. The most common type of hair loss is androgenetic alopecia, male-pattern hair loss or female-pattern hair loss. Men tend to lose hair on the front hairline and forehead and on top of the head; eventually, only hair around the ears, the sides, and back of the head remains. Women have diffuse hair thinning throughout the scalp.
- The hair fall can be more on head. In some cases hair loss occurs only on scalp while in most cases hair loss occurs on whole body.
Baldness Treatment
- For cosmetic reasons surgery is available since the 1950s, surgical hair replacement is a low-risk procedure.
- Surgeons remove tiny plugs (grafts) of your hair-bearing skin and transplant them into tiny holes made in your scalp. They take these plugs from the band of hair extending from above your ears around the back of your scalp.
- Generally it takes three to four sessions to cover a spot of baldness from the head.
- Hospitalization is not necessary. The surgery can be done with low anesthesia or with no anesthesia at all.
